Preparing Your Lawn for the Winter, Spring, Fall and Summer

How to prepare your lawn for Delhi winters

Every season brings its own hues to your life. Delhi experiences the major seasons, Summer, Rainy, Autumn, Winter and Spring with a distinct change of temperature in the atmosphere. For people who love gardening and have a lawn, it becomes essential to take care of the lawn in every season, as it is an integral part of your house.

Preparing Your Lawn for the Winter

How to take care of your house lawn in winter?

We all know how chilly Delhi winters can get. When we snuggle under our soft blankets, our house lawn in winter silently writhes and starts to die. With the deterioration of the beautiful green carpet during the colder months, the home loses its charm that it used to have in spring. For a beautiful yard post winter, we need to make sure that it has been taken care of pre-winter.

Landscape gardening is incomplete with a healthy growth of grass in your home lawn. It elaborates the beauty of the house and brings fresh air to the ambience as well. Delhi experiences dry and chilly winters along with frost and fog, so, here the lawns and gardens require ample amount of care. When the garden blossoms with the winter beauties like gerbera, dahlia, marigold, chrysanthemum and gladioli – the green patch within it need to be revived rather than left dull and dormant.

To keep the house lawn fresh and alive, make sure to have the right variety of grass (depending on the climate and type of garden such as public parks, home lawn or play area) available in the market. The kind of grass for the house lawn should be capable of bearing the extremities of the weather experienced in Delhi and north India.

Some of the major factors to be kept in mind while selecting and maintaining the grass in your house lawn are as follows:

The soil

It makes the life of the lawn of a house and should be of utmost quality. The top layer of soil needs to be of humus and loamy, so that the grass gets a healthy growth, before mowing it for the winter.

Type of grass

Delhi and the northern part of India are suitable for two popular varieties of grasses which can adorn your garden bed – Selection No. 1 and Calcutta Dhoob. Though, they are susceptible to the extreme cold in this region, they can be maintained well with adequate management by controlled irrigation during winters using sprinklers in the evening.

Type of grass

Apart from these two, there is another variety called Bermuda grass or the local dhoob, which is suitable to bear the warm temperature and tropical climate. It grows well under the sun and looks really healthy on your lawn throughout the year. Regular up-keeping would add beauty to its look and lend a luxurious view for your home.

Here, we come with the magic tips to maintain your lawn in winter just like you do it in autumn and spring:

  • Grass is not difficult to maintain as it grows perennially if proper attention is regularly given to it. During winters, make sure that the roots won’t dry up completely. Irrigate the home lawn in a certain interval depending upon the kind of grass.

  • Make sure there is no water logged underneath the surface as it can decay the roots. Proper drainage needs to be done to keep the lawn healthy and green.

  • Bird droppings and wind can accelerate the growth of weeds within the lawn. Regularly weeding it would help your yard kept neat and maintained.

  • Mow the lawn once in a month and before winter keep the height of the grass five inches above the ground. Treat the soil with urea after every mowing exercise for a beautifully kept house lawn.

  • In case you have a carpet that is considerably big then make sure to mow it regularly round the clock.

  • Make sure not to step over the grass, you can even cover the lawn with polyethylene sheets at night to protect them from the frostbite.

  • Frequent mowing is desirable for a carpet.

What is Kerala most famous for? Architecture

Stunning architecture designs in Kerala

Kerala, hailed as one of the ten paradises of the world and situated on the tropical Malabar Coast of India, is famous for ecotourism initiatives, beautiful backwaters and for architecture as well. Kerala’s architectural design is unique in India. The architectural style has evolved from Kerala’s unusual climate and long history of influences of its major naval trading partners like the Chinese, the Arabs and the Europeans.

Kerala’s Architecture can be broadly divided into two distinctive areas based on their functionality:

  1. Religious Architecture – Religion plays an important role in shaping Kerala’s architecture. Kerala has more than 2000 temples, which is far more than any other regions of India. ‘Thantra-Samuchayam’ and ‘Sliparatnam’ are the two construction thesis on which the temples of Kerala are constructed. Thantra-Samuchayam deals with developing structures that regulate energy flows wherein the positive energy flows in while the negative energy flows out. On the other hand, Sliparatnam deals with developing stone and timber architecture in a manner where each curved structure absorbs a life and has a personality of its own.

2

  1. Domestic Architecture – The trend of development of temple architecture resulted in the evolution of domestic architecture. The basic models were huts made of bamboo frame thatched with leaves in circular, square or rectangular shapes. Structurally, the roof of the frame was supported on pillars and walls were erected on a plinth raised from the ground for protection against dampness and insects in the tropical climate.

Abundance of timber resulted in the walls being made of it. Gable windows were evolved at the two ends to provide attic ventilation when ceiling was incorporated for the room spaces, resulting in air circulation and thermal control for the roof. The Shree Padmanabhapuram Palace represents the most classic Kerala domestic architecture. Basically, the domestic architecture of Kerala follows the style of detached building (a stand-alone residential structure that does not share outside walls with another house). In its most developed form the typical Kerala house is a courtyard-Nalukettu.
Nalukettu House – The Nalukettu House is the traditional homestead of old Tharavadu, like an ancestral home. These have the typical rectangular architecture with four walls joined together with a central courtyard open to sky. The four halls on the side are named Vadakkini (Northern block), Padinjattini (Western block), Kizhakkini (Eastern block) and Thekkini (Southern block).  These types of houses were basically created to keep the joint families together under one roof and enjoy the most commonly owned facilities. Almost every Nalukettu has its own Kula or Pond for bathing of its members.

Architecture of public structures – The public architectural development in Kerala was highly influenced by the European style during the seventeenth to eighteenth century. The architectural work was guided by the officers and engineers whose knowledge of architectural style was essentially restricted to classical books or to renaissance architects. In a sense, it was a compromise of antique craft and neo-classical construction needs. The modern architecture era in Kerala is a blend of British brick based style and Vernacular architectural designs to influence the contemporary architects.
